Artist Statement

One day as I was working with some abstract designs and overprinting them with a variety of tints and hues onto very thin Japanese paper I accidentally printed one image on the wrong side. It resulted in a slightly out of focus element. Thus, I was off and running, printing with abandon on this side and that and printing, and printing and printing until the image was resolved and the paper was so saturated that it would accept no more ink. This was a very exciting show to work on—it was stimulating to experiment with printing in a way that was uniquely, and wholly mine and had to be, more or less, from the hip. As the work progressed it became a game of wits and puzzles and hide and seek. But, when an image came to “be”, it was exhilarating. The resolution of the image took on an aura of poetry - each line being one unto itself, but necessary to the whole.

My granddaughter named the process “paintaglio”, a synergy of painting and intaglio. Each print is unique, it is a painting done with intaglio plates in place of brushes. When dry, the Japanese paper is trimmed and chine collé to Western printmaking paper.
