Artist’s Statement
My current body of work comprises intaglio prints inspired by the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest, where I have lived for 30 years. These prints are about the earth, sky and water and how the forces of nature shape and color these elements. Some of my landscapes capture a specific moment at a specific place, while others interpret and embellish certain details of nature to create a more abstracted suggestion of a place or natural event. Through my imagery I hope to capture–and share with the viewer–the emotional experience of observing the beauty, power and surprises of the natural world.
The process of coaxing out of a flat piece of copper the illusion of light, space, form and texture fascinates me. The etching technique I use for this process is predominately aquatint; utilizing soft ground, soap ground, sugar lift and spit bite. The monochromatic properties of intaglio printmaking suit my artistic exploration of the subtle and dramatic qualities of light and form in the landscape.
